BBC Radio 6 Music Celebrates: Dance Culture this April. So grab your glowsticks, your smiley face T-shirt and delve in to the world of rave with Dave Pearce, as he talks to Slipmatt.
Slipmatt began DJing in 1989 at the legendary Raindance raves and later that year joined forces with DJ Lime to form SL2. The duo were responsible for some of the biggest anthems of the time including DJs Take Control and 1992′s Number two hit On A Ragga Tip.
In this special programme, Dave Pearce and Slipmatt rewind the clocks to explore some of the biggest tunes that got dancefloors and muddy fields moving in the early 90s.

BBC Radio 6 Music Celebrates Kraftwerk, the influential German band whose song The Model reached the top of the UK charts 30 years ago.

Kraftwerk are one of the reasons that music sounds like it does today. Pioneers, 20 years before their time, they invented much of what we recognise as the tools of electronic music. But quite apart from being inventors they were funky as hell and became the most sampled artists ever.

In a documentary first broadcast on Radio 1 in 2006, Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos explores why they are so much more than four German blokes who loved bicycles.

Let’s face it, PCs are dull today compared to what they used to be. The days of the ST vs Amiga, Tandy vs Dragon were exciting because of the competition and banter between all the platforms. However, these days are long gone so here’s my little bit to keep the old times alive!

Here is a bunch of some of my favourites from back in the day.

NOTE:

These files may contain copyrighted and/or licensed material. If you are unsure
on the legality of downloading these and/or if you do not own the rights to any of this
software then please don’t download it.

I am not a software pirate and do not condone it either. This is for educational
and personal entertainment purposes only.

If you are the owner of these files and wish them to be removed, just
ask and I will gladly do so.

Firstly, to play any of the games below you’re likely to need one of these emulators:

Commodore Amiga: WinUAE

Next, the games!
Note that for the purists out there, any Atari ST disks marked with a * are STX “Pasti” disk images, exact copies of the original releases. These disks require installation of pasti.dll in the emulator. Instructions contained in the installation files above.

F1 2010 game

I recently had some annoying sound issues with my install of the awesome Codemasters F1 2010 game on my PC. I’d recently reinstalled the whole PC due to a hard disk failure (thank God for the backups!) and noticed that from this point on, quite a few games were struggling where sound output was concerned. F1 2010 was by far the worst offender. Samples occasionally wouldn’t play out and the sound was very poppy and crackly at times, especially when there were lots of simultaneous car engines around.

The box I play on is a modded Acer Aspire M3201
Windows 7 Home Premium 32Bit
3GB RAM
ATI AMD Radeon HD 4850 512MB
Realtek High Definition onboard sound

Turns out I wasn’t the only one with sound issues as the game is evidently quite fussy with some hardware and driver combinations. I also discovered that the bog standard Windows7-supplied Realtek HD drivers are not exactly much cop.

Further to that, when it comes to installing the official Realtek drivers there are TWO parts to install. Realtek make it look like the second part is not essential to have but it’s fixed all my sound problems with all my previously struggling games. (L4D2, F1 2010, Grid to name the main culprits.)

Both driver installs are available from Realtek’s official site under “High Definition Audio Codecs” but as their download sites were so so slow I’ve uploaded them here too for people to yoink if they don’t fancy waiting an hour for their drivers to download.

First part:
Official Realtek High Definition Audio Codec R2.61 for Windows Vista & Windows 7 – 32/64bit
Download: Modula.org.uk | Realtek Official

Second part: 3D SoundBack Beta 0.1
Download: Modula.org.uk | Realtek Official

NOTE:

Use at your own risk. Don’t blame me if it messes things up for whatever reason. By downloading his means you’ve read and accepted any blurb that Realtek may have wanted to give you on their website before you download this stuff!

Incidentally … The F1 games from Codemasters are fantastic. F1 racer fans … go buy it!

Got a spare 486/Pentium PC knocking about?

Then why not make use of it? This little beastie I’m running here is an Intel Pentium 133Mhz, 48mb RAM, 2GB HDD. It runs MS DOS 6.22 & Windows for Workgroups v3.11. It’s sat happily on the internet with web browser, FTP client et al and makes a perfect IRC machine.

If you have a box gathering dust that you feel like resurrecting, use the files below. I have included the driver disks for my hardware in case they are of use to anyone else.

NOTE:
These files may contain copyrighted and/or licensed material. If you are unsure on the legality of downloading these and/or if you do not own the rights to any of this software then please don’t download it. I am not a software pirate and do not condone it either. This is for educational and personal entertainment purposes only.
If you are the owner of these files and wish them to be removed, just ask and I will gladly do so.

Furthermore, to any web developers who may be browsing this site, yes I have used tables! Get over yourself!

All OS and Drivers disks are IMG disk images. These are extractable using WinImage (16-bit, 32-bit, 64-bit) or Disk Copy Fast (DOS).

In a special edition of Dance Anthems, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe – aka The Pet Shop Boys – join Dave Pearce to discuss their favourite dance music tunes from the past 25 years and how club music has influenced their career. In the two hour programme, the duo – who won the lifetime achievement after at the 2009 Brit Awards – tell Dave how a trip to New York in 1983 started their journey into the dance world, leading them to work with the likes of Frankie Knuckles, David Morales and Shep Pettibone. They also share their memories of clubbing to tunes by Bobby O, Brothers In Rhythm and Felix Da Housecat and discuss how their contribution to dance music has often been overlooked. The band also tell Dave about their new single and world tour and also share their memories of tracks by Grandmaster Flash, Tomkraft and Rollo.
